UN Aviation Body Rules Russia Responsible For Downing MH17, Killing 298

Over 11 years after Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17 was shot down over eastern Ukraine, the UN’s aviation body has ruled that Russia is responsible for the tragedy that killed all 298 people on board, including 196 Dutch and 38 Australian citizens or residents.

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) is now expected to determine compensation. Australia and the Netherlands, who brought the case in 2022, urged Russia to engage in restitution talks.

MH17 was downed on July 17, 2014, during heavy fighting between pro-Russian separatists and Ukrainian forces. In 2022, Dutch courts found two Russians and a Ukrainian guilty in absentia. Russia refused extradition and dismissed the verdict as “scandalous.”

Dutch and Australian foreign ministers welcomed the ICAO ruling as a major step toward justice. Australia called on Russia to accept responsibility and comply with international law.

Although ICAO lacks regulatory power, its rulings carry global influence. Australia has sanctioned several individuals, including Russian military officials and separatist leaders, for their roles in the attack. The country remains committed to seeking truth, justice, and accountability for the victims.
