In June 2021, Reazjhana Williams arrived at a Denver hospital excited to welcome her baby girl through a natural birth. However, when medical staff were unable to detect her baby’s heartbeat, the situation quickly shifted to an emergency. Reazjhana was soon taken for a C-section to ensure the safety of both mother and child.
Kyanni, her newborn daughter, was delivered safely but with a serious facial injury—a deep laceration requiring immediate medical attention. The wound extended from her cheek toward her ear and needed thirteen stitches. Due to the severity of the injury, Kyanni was taken directly to a plastic surgeon, which meant she missed the initial bonding moments with her mother.
Doctors later explained that Kyanni’s head had been positioned close to the uterine wall, which may have contributed to the injury during the emergency procedure. While such complications are rare, the experience was understandably difficult for the family.
“It’s been hard to process,” Reazjhana shared. “We never expected this to happen during what should have been a joyful moment.”
