Rob Reiner, Iconic Filmmaker Behind ‘When Harry Met Sally’ and ‘A Few Good Men,’ Dies at 78

Legendary filmmaker and actor Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer, were found murd3red in their Los Angeles home on Sunday. Reiner was 78, Singer 68. Authorities say their son, Nick Reiner, 32, has been arrested and charged in connection with the k1llings and is being held on $4 million bail.

The couple’s daughter, Romy, discovered their bodies around 3:30 p.m. and told police she believed a family member should be considered a suspect, according to reports. Investigators say the victims’ throats had been slashed.

Reiner, the son of comedy icon Carl Reiner and actress Estelle Reiner, rose to fame as Mike “Meathead” Stivic on All in the Family, earning nine Emmy nominations and two wins. He later became one of Hollywood’s most successful directors, responsible for classics including Stand by Me, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, Misery, and A Few Good Men.

His directorial debut, This Is Spinal Tap (1984), became a cult classic and later spawned a sequel, Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, released in 2025. Between 1986 and 1996, Reiner’s films earned 11 Academy Award nominations, with Kathy Bates winning an Oscar for Misery.

In addition to directing, Reiner appeared in numerous films and television series, including Sleepless in Seattle, The First Wives Club, The Wolf of Wall Street, and New Girl. He was also known as an outspoken progressive activist and philanthropist, co-founding the I Am Your Child Foundation and Parents’ Action for Children.

Reiner and Singer are survived by four children: Tracy, Jake, Nick, and Romy. Nick previously co-wrote the semi-autobiographical film Being Charlie (2016), which Reiner directed
