Why You Should Never Pour Hot Water Into The Sink

While this habit may seem harmless, it can actually damage pipes and drainage systems, leading to both economic and environmental consequences.

Accelerates Drainage Pipe Aging
In the past, sink drain pipes were commonly made of metal, but today they are typically made of plastic, which can better withstand high temperatures. However, frequently discharging hot water can cause these plastic pipes to degrade over time. This can reduce their lifespan, eventually leading to pipe damage and forcing you to spend more on repairs and replacements.

Risk of Deformation and Cracking
Not all drain pipes are created equal when it comes to heat resistance. If your home uses PVC pipes, be cautious, as some types cannot tolerate temperatures over 60°C. Pouring hot liquids, like vegetable broth or water from blanching vegetables (which can be around 90°C), can deform, crack, or even cause the pipes to burst due to the excessive heat.

How to Protect Your Kitchen Sink Drainage System
Experts from Magnet, as quoted by The Mirror, recommend these three strategies to safeguard your sink drainage system:

Most kitchen sinks come equipped with a filter to prevent large food particles or grease from entering the pipes, but upgrading to a larger filter can further reduce the risk of clogs and blockages.
Dispose of Leftover Food in the Trash
Although it might seem convenient to rinse off food remnants from plates and dishes before washing, even small amounts of food can contribute to blockages over time. To prevent this, simply dispose of any leftover food in the trash rather than washing it down the sink.
