Friend Reveals Chilling Reason Gene Hackman Couldn’t Call For Help After His Wife Died

Hollywood legend Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, were found dead in their New Mexico home under heartbreaking circumstances, with new details painting a tragic picture of their final days.

Sources close to the couple have revealed that Hackman, 95, did not own a cellphone and was largely disconnected from technology. This left him unable to call for help after his wife passed away from a rare rat-borne illness. With Hackman suffering from advanced Alzheimer’s, the actor was likely unaware of the dire situation unfolding around him.

A Devastating Chain of Events

According to New Mexico officials, Arakawa, 65, passed away on February 11 after contracting Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome, a dangerous infection linked to rodent droppings. Hackman is believed to have survived for about a week before dying from heart disease on February 18. Their bodies were discovered on February 26 in separate rooms of their $3.8 million Santa Fe estate.
A close friend of the couple, Tom Allin, explained that Hackman had never been interested in modern technology and did not own a mobile phone. This lack of access to emergency services likely left him stranded when his wife passed away.

“This is heartbreaking,” a source familiar with the situation shared. “Mrs. Hackman died, and Gene—so deep in his Alzheimer’s—was wandering the house, unable to grasp what had happened.”
Adding to the tragedy, their beloved 12-year-old dog, Zinna, also perished. The pet had been crated after a medical procedure and was found dead near Arakawa. Authorities believe Hackman, in his advanced cognitive state, may not have realized the dog was still locked up.

Unanswered Questions

Despite the heartbreaking circumstances, some close to Hackman have expressed disbelief that the actor couldn’t call for help. Doug Lanham, a longtime friend and former business partner, told in an interview that the situation is difficult to comprehend.

“We all knew he was in the advanced stages of Alzheimer’s, but he was still writing and painting,” Lanham said. “It makes no sense. It’s just so bizarre.”

Authorities are working to piece together the final days of the couple. Surveillance footage shows Arakawa running errands on February 11, including visiting a farmers’ market, a CVS pharmacy, and a pet food store before returning home at 5:15 p.m. That evening appears to be the last time she was seen alive.

Hackman, whose health had been declining for years, was discovered near the kitchen in what officials believe may have been a fall. His sunglasses and cane were found beside him.

A Rare but Deadly Virus

Medical experts confirmed that Arakawa’s death was caused by hantavirus, a rare but deadly infection primarily found in the western United States. The disease is not spread from person to person but is contracted through exposure to rodent droppings, particularly in enclosed spaces with poor ventilation.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) noted that while the couple’s primary home showed no signs of rodent activity, some of the property’s outbuildings—including a garage and two casitas—had evidence of rodents.

Hantavirus can cause severe respiratory illness, with symptoms including shortness of breath, coughing, and chest tightness. The mortality rate for the strain found in the southwestern U.S. ranges from 38% to 50%.

A Heartbreaking End

Authorities ruled both Hackman and Arakawa’s deaths as natural, with no signs of external trauma. However, the chilling reality remains: a legendary actor, cut off from technology and suffering from cognitive decline, was left alone after his wife’s passing, unable to seek help.

The couple, who had been together for over three decades, now leave behind a legacy of love and a sorrowful end that has shocked Hollywood and fans alike.
