Jensen Ackles Reveals This ‘Supernatural’ Episode Was a Nightmare To Film for 1 Absurd Reason

By Ivaylo Angelov

Supernatural stars Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, and Misha Collins, are celebrating the beloved horror series’ 20th anniversary by giving their opinions about their time on the show, which ended in 2020.
In a September 2025 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Ackles, who played demon hunter Dean Winchester, Padalecki, who played Dean’s brother, Sam, and Collins, who played the angel Castiel, got candid about one particular Supernatural episode. During the Entertainment Weekly interview, the Supernatural co-stars were asked if “‘Bugs’ [is] actually the worst episode of Supernatural?” The Season 1 episode, which premiered in 2005, focuses on mysterious deaths relating to bugs. Toward the end of the episode, Dean and Sam have to defeat a swarm of bees.

Ackles responded that he believed the episode was the worst in all 15 seasons of the series.

“Yes, I think it was, because of what we went through and what it ended up being. Basically, the juice wasn’t worth the squeeze,” said Ackles to the publication.

Collins, who began starring in Supernatural during its fourth season, then asked if the episode featured real bugs.Supernatural memorabilia

“Like 70,000 bees,” replied Padalecki, as reported by Entertainment Weekly.

Ackles also said he and Padalecki “were literally being stung by bees” when filming the episode.

“And then they get to post [production], and the bees didn’t show up on camera so they had to VIXFX the bees,” continued Ackles in the Entertainment Weekly interview.Movie streaming services

In addition, Padalecki shared that there wasn’t a way to ensure that he and Ackles wouldn’t get stung by the bees.

“We go meet the bee specialist and it’s a dude with, like, mesh and a big pair of surgical tweezers holding a bee saying, ‘So we’re going to sting you, but it can’t give all of its venom. But we’ll find out if you’re allergic,’” said Padalecki during the interview. “And then, when we were shooting the episode, and they’re like, ‘Listen, there’s no queen bee here, so they’re not gonna bite you. They’re not gonna sting you unless you really piss them off.’ Well, how do you piss them off? ‘If you swat them.’ Wait, the whole scene is about us trying to get rid of bees. They’re like, “Don’t get rid of the bees, just guide them away. Gently guide them away.’ It was the most absurd thing.”

Jensen Ackles & Jared Padalecki Shared What Episode of ‘Supernatural’ Scared Them the Most

While “Bugs” was a nightmare to film, Ackles and Padalecki named different episodes of Supernatural as the scariest. In a joint October 2017 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Padalecki said he was frightened of Season 2, Episode 4 (“Children Shouldn’t Play With Dead Things”) and Season 1, Episode 6 (“Skins”). He explained he found both episodes unnerving because they dealt with shape-shifters.Online movie streaming servicesSupernatural memorabilia

“I tend towards episodes where it’s not obvious like, ‘Hey there’s the bad thing. Let’s get it.’ Which I love. But I tend towards like ‘I’m talking to you. But I don’t know if you are really you,’” said the Gilmore Girls actor during the 2017 interview.

Meanwhile, Ackles said he thought Season 1, Episode 15 (“The Benders”) and Season 2, Episode 11 (“Playthings”) were particularly spooky. Ackles noted that “The Benders” dealt with a family of serial killers.

“It wasn’t a monster. It was real people, humans doing a bad thing,” said Ackles to the publication.

He then said he felt “Playthings” was scary because he wasn’t fond of the creepy vintage dolls in the episode.
