NCIS: Tony & Ziva star James D’Arcy spoke out after his character Henry was unexpectedly murdered during the Paramount+ series’ Sept. 18 episode.

NCIS fans are still reeling from one character’s shocking death.

During NCIS: Tony & Ziva‘s Sept. 18 episode, James D’Arcy‘s character Henry was unexpectedly stabbed and shot in the head after helping Tony (Michael Weatherly) and Ziva (Cote de Pablo) escape capture from the bad guys.

Henry’s good deed proved that he, in fact, was not working against Interpol from the inside. Instead, it was Jonah (Julian Ovenden) who was working with the villainous Martine (Nassima Benchicou) all along.

After being freed, Tony and Ziva rushed to rescue their daughter, leaving Henry alone with Jonah, who brutally murdered their team member as they watched helplessly.

And while the death might have caught fans off guard, D’Arcy knew his character’s outcome all along.

In an interview with TV Line published Sept. 18, D’Arcy explained that series creator and longtime friend John McNamara was up front about Henry’s story arc from the get go.

We did a pilot nearly 20 years ago, and that nearly killed my career because it didn’t take off,” the Dunkirk actor joked. “And then he decided he wanted to do it a second time!”

D’Arcy also teased how Henry’s murder in episode five will drastically influence the upcoming season one episodes.

“The fact that they’ve killed off a character that was pretty integral at this point in the show will raise the stakes fairly dramatically, because you really don’t know who’s the bad guy,” he noted. “We don’t know who’s gonna die next. You don’t know, ‘Is Jonah the bad guy? Or is he working for somebody else, or what’s happening there?’ I think it leaves it pretty open to the idea that anyone could die at any time.”
